Learn MoreYeshiva University and Cardozo School of Law STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN 2023-2024 Academic Year Insurance Requirement Undergraduate and Graduate students registered for 6 or more credits must have health insurance while attending Yeshiva University or Cardozo School of Law. Students required to have insurance are charged for the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) at registration and must confirm enrollment or submit a waiver to opt out by the deadline . Students who do not take action by the deadline will be enrolled in the SHIP retroactively to the policy effective date and responsible for the SHIP cost. Online-only students and students taking less than 6 credits are not eligible for the plan. Students taking campus courses remotely or studying outside the U.S. are required to comply with the insurance requirement. If the student does not return for the spring semester, the student’s enrollment will be adjusted to fall-only coverage from 08/15/2023 - 01/09/2024, and the insurance cost will be adjusted to $2,175. The published cost includes a $25 administrative fee. Plan Highlights The SHIP is an Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliant plan insured by Aetna Student Health and includes access to Aetna’s national network of participating providers. Students do not have to select a primary care physician, and referrals are not required. University Health Plans works with Yeshiva/Cardozo to administer the SHIP and help with any waiver, enrollment, or general benefit-related questions. For specific benefit questions or claims, students should contact Aetna. Enrollment Process Although students are automatically charged for the SHIP, student information is not transferred to Aetna until after the deadline. Students should submit an enrollment form as soon as possible to avoid difficulties accessing their health insurance benefits. Please allow up to 7 days after submitting the enrollment form for the student information to be active in the insurance company’s database. Students who do not submit an enrollment or waiver form by the deadline will be enrolled in the SHIP retroactively to the policy effective date and responsible for the insurance premium. The student insurance cost is charged to the tuition statement. The dependent insurance cost is paid to UHP via credit card when the form is submitted. Waiver Process Yeshiva/Cardozo requires students to be insured by an active plan comparable to the SHIP, and a waiver form is required each academic year. Before waiving, compare the SHIP’s cost, geographical coverage area, and benefits to your existing plan. Please note if you are enrolled in an out-of-state Medicaid, HMO, or EPO plan, your coverage may not be sufficient in NYC. Many out-of-state plans do not provide comprehensive benefits outside of the home service area, and urgent or emergency-only coverage in NYC may not be sufficient. Students Studying Outside the US are required to document they have comprehensive insurance coverage in the area in which they will study. If the student chooses to waive, this may include enrollment in the national healthcare system or an international travel policy that provides coverage in the student’s location. Students are advised to maintain insurance coverage in their home country as foreign coverage typically does not provide coverage in the student’s home country. Once you waive the student insurance plan, you can only voluntarily enroll if you qualify for special enrollment rights. The spring coverage period is only available to new spring students. Eligibility If the student drops below the minimum credits within the first 31 days of classes, the student is ineligible for the SHIP. Coverage will be retroactively terminated, and premiums will be refunded (pending claims review). If the student withdraws after the first 31 days of classes or is under a school-approved leave of absence, the student will remain eligible for the semester. The student will be responsible for the premium associated with the coverage period. Students who do not meet the eligibility for the spring semester will not be automatically enrolled in the spring coverage period. Enrollment in the SHIP will be adjusted to the fall-only period from 08/15/2023 - 01/09/2024, and the insurance charge will be adjusted to $2,175. Students who do not meet the eligibility for spring and wish to continue their coverage should contact yuship@yu.edu. Eligible students may also enroll their lawful spouse, domestic partner, and dependent children up to age 26. Early Termination Students may request mid-year termination if enrolled in a comparable health insurance plan with an effective date on or before the requested termination date. The deadline to submit the termination request form is the last day of the month before the termination date requested. Qualifying Event Enrollment Students who waived the SHIP or did not enroll their dependents during their initial eligibility may qualify for special enrollment rights if they have one of the following life events. The deadline to submit the qualifying life event enrollment form is 30 days from the event date, and supporting documentation is required.
